Caring women: gendered experiences in the Yugoslav Partisan medical corps (1941-1945)

May 11th, 2 p.m.

The onset of World War II saw an unprecedented number of women join the Yugoslav Partisan forces in the National Liberation Struggle. Many of them were tasked with caring for the sick and wounded, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other auxiliary staff. This lecture will discuss the development of the Partisan medical corps and consider some of the specificities of women’s wartime experiences both at the heart and on the margins of the sanitet.

Ewa Anna Kumelowski is a historian of 20th Century Yugoslav cultural history whose research focuses on everyday experiences of war, particularly amongst marginalized or otherwise overlooked populations, and the role of culture within armed conflict. She completed her PhD in 2022 as part of a cotutelle procedure between the Chair of South-eastern History at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin and the CETOBaC at the EHESS in Paris, examining narrative production within the visual arts scene of besieged Sarajevo. Since then, she has held a number of visiting fellowships and a research residency at the Institute for Advanced Sciences in Nantes. She is currently based at the Institute of Contemporary History in Ljubljana, where she is working as a post-doctoral fellow on the ERA project “Partisan Care: women’s wartime experiences in the Yugoslav Partisan Medical Corps”.
