PhD position at the project
“The Aggressor: Self-Perception and External Perception of an Actor Between Nations”

(The Anthropos Doctoral School, Polish Academy of Sciences and Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw)

We invite applications for one PhD position within the Project “The Aggressor: Self-Perception and External Perception of an Actor Between Nations.” Directed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Maissen (Department of History, Heidelberg University) and supported by a generous grant from the Daimler and Benz Foundation, this international interdisciplinary project investigates the identity-forming construction of national images of the enemy, which are shaped by aggressors from neighbouring countries throughout Europe.

The project focuses on key historical figures and their contested historiographical interpretations but is also open to less conventional approaches to “clusters” of aggressors. It addresses different media of representation, including artistic, audiovisual, or digital. A detailed description of the project and the researchers involved can be found here.

The doctoral scholarship allows for the conceptualization and preparation of an English or German-language thesis within four years. The project can be freely formulated within the framework of the above-mentioned description. Successful applicant will be admitted to the Anthropos Doctoral School and conduct their project at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw and in cooperation with other researchers involved in the „Agressor” Project.
