As part of the NAWA STER program NextGenPhds, Dr. Zachary Mazur travelled to Slovenia in mid-April 2024 to give a talk about his research and meet with representatives from the University of Ljubljana Doctoral School.

Dr. Mazur’s talk presented a forthcoming book project titled To Kill a Spy: Political Violence and Everyday Nationalism in Fin de siecle Europe. The book analyzes one event: a murder that took place in Krakow in 1910, then located in Austria-Hungary. Stanisław Trudnowski killed a man who was allegedly a Russian spy. The chapters show Trudnowski’s path to radicalization and nationalism during the Revolution of 1905 when he lived in Warsaw, the effects of the revolution on Austria-Hungary, and various ways that people learned to adopt national thinking about the world around them. The book will show how mass politics, intimate violence, and inter-imperial competition spurred the rise of national movements among Poles, Jews and Ukrainians in East Central Europe.

In addition to the talk, delivered to students and staff at the University of Ljubljana, Dr. Mazur met with deans and leaders of the Doctoral School to compare curriculums and work on future cooperation.
