„Contemporary Challenges and Opportunities in War Crimes Investigations: A Practitioner’s Perspective”
This talk will cover, from a perspective of practice, attempts to build comprehensive strategies to ensure accountability for crimes under Rome Statute jurisdiction, from the domestic to international levels. It will briefly review the history of contemporary institutions for international criminal accountability, and highlight the work of Truth Hounds—a Ukrainian organization that works in collaboration with the ICC, Ukrainian prosecutors, and prosecutors abroad working under universal jurisdiction—in advancing accountability in Ukraine, and using the Ukrainian context to facilitate the progressive development of international law. Concluding, it will look towards potential challenges
and horizons for growth in the contemporary order.
Evan Harary is an adjunct professor at the University of Warsaw and Legal Fellow at Truth Hounds, where he assists in researching and drafting reports and ICC submissions on crimes under the jurisdiction of the Rome Statute committed in Ukraine. Before joining Truth Hounds, Evan was a practicing attorney in asylum law in the US. He is an alumnus of Fulbright Ukraine and the University of a Michigan law school.
